Riccardo attended classical studies (main: Greek, Latin, Philosophy), before enrolling into an BSc in Aerospace Engineering (degree: 2011, Sapienza). He then got his MSc with full marks in Aeronautical Engineering (March 2014, Sapienza) and the title of Doctor Europaeus (PhD) in Industrial and Management Engineering (2017) defending the thesis: "Developing risk and safety management methods for complex socio-technical systems: From Newtonian reasoning to Resilience Engineering".

During his PhD, Riccardo researched jointly with Lund University (Division of risk management and societal safety) about resilience for complex socio-technical system, both at a epistemiological level and at operational level, with implications for aircraft cockpit interactions, and maritime operations. Soon after defending his PhD thesis, he worked as a PhD intern at Eurocontrol Headquarters in Brussels (Belgium) for the Network Mangement Directorate (Network Operations Management - Safety Unit) on modelling airspace safety performance. In 2018, he started working as a PostDoc researcher at Sapienza, Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering - Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Starting in October 2021 Riccardo is a tenure track assistant professor in Industrial Systems Engineering at Sapienza. His main research interests span over resilience engineering, risk and safety management for complex socio-technical systems. He is also researching on spare parts management and logistics, in relation to reliability and maintenance engineering. His research activities mainly relate to industrial plants, the Air Traffic Management system and other transportation systems, and other critical infrastructures. He pairs these activities with his role in aiComply, Sapienza spin-off specialized in risk and compliance management, and advanced intelligent data systems.

He authored and co-authored more than 100 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and international conference proceedings. Riccardo is a member of the editorial board of Safety Science (Elsevier), Reliability Engineering and System Safety (Elsevier), WUT Journal of Transport Engineering (Warsaw University of Technology), Cogent Engineering (Taylor & Francis), and International Journal of Business Intelligence Research (IGI Global). He serves as a reviewer for more than 60 journals in the area of engineering, decision sciences, business, management and accounting. Currently Riccardo is alaso active as a guest editor for Sustainability (MDPI), Infrastructures (MDPI), Safety Science (Elsevier), Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industry (Elsevier).

His research efforts have been recognized by several awards, see some examples. In 2017, he got the Royal Aeronautical Society young person award. In July 2018, he got the National Academic Qualification as Associate Professor (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) in "Industrial Systems Engineering". In 2019 he got the Premio Italia Giovane. In 2019, Riccardo has been listed in the Forbes 30 under 30 list, in the category "science and healthcare", and in the same year he has been nominated as one of the 100 italian young leaders of future in the category "science" by Forbes Italia.
