ISO suggests that a thesis is a "document which presents the authors's research and findings and submitted by him/her in support of his/her candidature for a degree or professional qualification". This 1986 ISO documentation was last reviewed and confirmed in 2019.
A. Einstein suggested that "If we knew what were doing it wouldn’t be called research."
Combining the two definitions, I believe that a thesis should be explorative and challenging by its inherent nature.
